What an exciting week on the farm!! Four new babies have joined the flock. Sunday, after church, Curtis went out to check the animals and came back in super fired up to have found a lamb - there was a little extra excitement behind this baby because it was the first BOY lamb born on the farm. Hank was big, strong and very healthy. On Tuesday, we noticed one of our ewes was showing signs of having a baby soon. The boys had left to go fishing before baseball practice and I was getting ready to go out to dinner with some friends when I noticed she was acting rather peculiar. I went out and watcher her for a bit and just sensed something wasn’t quite right. But…being new to this farming thing and I had never seen any of the sheep give birth…I really didn’t know what “normal” was in this situation. Thank goodness for technology and friends who will answer the phone no matter when it is or where they are….in this particular case my friend Ashli was coaching her volleyball team but she didn’t hesitate to help out! She confirmed that the momma needed help and she suggested that I get the boys to help me. “Eeek!! I’m home alone!!” Then our neighbors pulled in their drive so I gave them a call —- with no hesitation here comes Belinda with her daughter Alexsys. The three of us try to help the ewe but none of are really sure the best next steps…so we phone another friend…our neighbors down the road, Jennifer and Mallory, come down with warm, soapy water and paper towels. Jennifer guides the process and Alexsys successfully pulls the lamb. Another boy!! Tank made his way into the world surrounded by a crew of women cheering him on ! Jennifer gave us some tips on how to perk him up. In just a few short minutes, he was up, active and bonding with his mom, Freckles. Two days later, we were putting those tips to work again on the farm. This time the mom didn’t need assistance. We saw we had a new baby so we ran out to see if it was a boy or a girl…first girl of the week…Miss Diamond (she has beautiful markings around her eyes that resemble diamonds)! I stayed out a bit just making sure they bonded because ShayShay (the mom) was acting strange. Well…here comes baby #2!! A pure white little boy lamb. ShayShay cleaned off his face but then just left him and tended to Diamond. The boys came back out, we grabbed warm water, soapy water, and towels and Sawyer went right to work on cleaning Buck off. Unfortunately, ShayShay never took to Buck, so we are giving him extra TLC and bottle feeding him. Our small but growing herd definitely keeps us on our toes and things very interesting around here…and we are all enjoying it! Chaotic at times but it’s lots of fun watching the little lambs flourish. We are continuing to learn a lot on a daily basis and so appreciate everyone who lends a helping hand + gives great advice. It truly takes a village to keep things moving forward. If you find yourself in a spot where you don’t have all the answers or you need help - reach out! People love to help people! Life is so much better with others. Looking forward to what the week ahead brings, Rach Scripture: Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 1 Peter 3:8Quote: “A person’s most useful asset is not full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and hand willing to help others.” Farm AnimalsFarm Life
