I have grown up hearing all sorts of “Old Wives Tales”: Plucking gray hairs will make two grow back in. If you swallow gum, it stays in your belly for 7 years. Pee on a jellyfish sting. Eating carrots will give you better eyesight. In the farming world, I’m not sure what “tricks of the trade” are referred to but I love it when the knowledge is passed down! The most recent one that has worked wonders was for our lamb who had scours (…very loose stool…). Our friend told us to mix half an egg yolk with 4 ounces of milk. We gave that combination to RaeRae and she was back to normal in no time! I’m always amazed at these tips that seem so random but hold a powerful punch. It just seriously makes me say, “Huh? I wonder who the first person was to put a raw egg yolk…I mean 1/2 an egg yolk… in the milk to help a lambs belly?”Even though haired sheep are known to be very hearty animals, they still require tending to, attention and care. We are constantly learning something new. Currently, one of our lambs has sores around her lips. Unfortunately, it’s a virus that just has to run its course. We have learned how to help lambs with bloat by blending a small amount of baking soda and water together. Not only do our farm animals keep us on our toes with all their random health needs, but so do our kiddos at times. One of our boys gave us a scare the other morning. The two older boys are early risers - always have been! As soon as their eyes open, they pop up, get dressed for the day, and head out to do chores. (We homeschool and most days we are home ALL DAY so there’s no rush to get to the chores early but that’s just how they are wired). As he was watering the pigs, he got really tired. He talked about how his heart was beating really fast. He took a break by the pig pen, then came up to the house, but was still not feeling well so he stopped at the back steps. After talking to our family doctor, we decided to get blood work checked. Thankfully the test results came back quickly and it did show his blood sugar was low. It’s something we continue to monitor and pray nothing more becomes of it. Of course, my son chose to downplay it and make sure to reinsure me it was no big deal…well that is until it came time to shower before bedtime and he said, “Oh, I better not! What if I have a heart attack in the shower?” He knows how to try and work the system. Ha ha!! When things aren’t going smoothly, I can feel unwelcome anxiety creep in and my mind can spiral into worse case scenarios. To detour those thoughts and feelings, I remind myself of the words my friends once spoke: “What you worry about the most is what you trust God with the least.” Ouch! That hit my heart hard and it does each time I repeat it or write it out. While we never know what tomorrow holds, I am filled with joy to the brim that I know WHO holds tomorrow. Living a life set apart, Rach Scripture: Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.
